For someone who sees a super model in the mirror every morning, nail polish and eyeliner might be decent tools for their self-fulfillment. But for Amanda Beard that’s not enough. The American swimmer holds the world record in the 200 metres breaststroke and also campaigns for animal rights. Among other things.

Amanda was born on October 21, 1981 and is 173 cm (5’8) tall.

Her two older sisters Leah and Taryn got her interested in swimming, taking Amanda with them to a swimming club when she was five years old.

Apart from her work as a model and as a pro swimmer Amanda studied at the University of Arizona Retail and Consumer Sciences and dabbled in fashion and interior designing.

Her best times are 1:07.42 in 100 meters, 2:22.44 in 200 meter breaststroke and 2:11.70 in 200 meter individual medley.

Last August Amanda posed naked for an anti-fur campaign for the animal rights organization PETA.

She is also an ambassador for the animal rights organization Defenders of Wildlife, which campaigns for the protection of wolves, grizzly bears and jaguars in North America.

She likes Mexican food, and music by the Grateful Dead and Bob Marley.

She took part in her first Olympic Games in 1996 at the age of 14. One gold and two silver medals in Atlanta made her a national hero.

Amanda describes her most emotional sports experience as being her comeback in 2000 when she swam up from the world ranking of 60th to be among the world’s top swimmers.

Amanda’s motto is ‘Seize the day’.
