Tom van Steenbergen started racing BMX in the Netherlands when he was 11 years old, alongside his brother, and now fellow pro rider, Bas van Steenbergen. In his teen years his family moved to Canada, where he discovered downhill mountain biking. After racing for two years Tom started entering some minor dirt jump competitions on the side and then ended up winning Crankworx Best Trick in 2012. After that surprise win, he made the switch from racing to a full-time focus on slopestyle, bringing with him years of racing BMX and downhill skills. Tom is a relatively reserved guy, letting his riding do his talking for him. He attempted a monster front flip during the 2014 Red Bull Rampage that he, unfortunately, wasn't able to ride away from. But today, Tom's 2014 front flip attempt is widely accepted as one of the burliest freeride tricks ever attempted. Building off the first attempt, he's landed in the top 10 at the last two Red Bull Rampage events, taking home the NBC signature move in 2017. Along with competing, he spends time freeriding and filming. Prior to North of Nightfall he was featured in Follow the Fraser and exploded onto the scene with a 70-foot front slip attempt that appeared in Anthill Films' UnReal movie. "I want to be able to inspire the next generation with my riding by combining technical tricks with big mountain riding," says Tom. "I've set some high goals for myself that will not be easy to achieve but I'm making steps in the right direction every day."
