Within two years of getting on a bike, he was competing and winning races. And today, Toby’s list of titles and championships is beyond impressive.
He won both the Finke and Hattah desert races on his first attempt, as well as the Australian Off Road Championship and Australian 4 Day Enduro Races. In 2014, he became the first rider in history to win the Australian Off Road Championship four times, as well as more wins in Finke and Hattah.
In 2015, he debuted in the Dakar rally and finished third overall, then went on to nab his fourth Finke, fifth Hattah and fifth Australian Off Road Championship titles that same year. In 2016 he won Dakar on his second attempt (and became the only person to ever win on their second attempt, and the only Australian to ever win any class of the Dakar Rally), then became the first Australian to win the Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge. He returned to Finke, where he raced in both the car and bike categories, and came second and first respectively.
While 2017 was mired by injuries, and 2018 was spent recovering, Toby was still able to finish third in Dakar, and claim his sixth win at Finke. He won the 2019 Dakar rally (coming off a fresh broken wrist) and was awarded the inaugural Ronald J Walker Award for Excellence by the Australian Motor Sport Hall of Fame.
The COVID-19 pandemic threw a spanner in the works in 2020, but Toby still managed to place third in Dakar. The 2021 Dakar left Toby with a broken collarbone, shoulder and hand, but he somehow still made it to the start line of Finke in time to win BOTH the car and bike categories (which, yes, was another history-making achievement).
And through all this, Toby is known for being one of the best blokes you could ever hope to meet, a consummate professional, and as down-to-earth as the red dirt that he’s spent the vast majority of his life racing through.
Oh, and did we mention his Order of Australia medal for service to motorsport? Yeah, that happened in 2021 too. Toby Price: take a bow. You are officially a legend.
In 2022, Toby Price faced significant challenges yet continued to showcase remarkable resilience. At the Dakar Rally, a navigation issue on stage 1 cost him considerable time, resulting in a 10th place finish, marking his worst performance in the event. Despite this setback, he clinched his 8th Finke Crown, demonstrating his enduring skill and determination. Midway through the year, he underwent wrist surgery, further proving his commitment to overcoming physical hurdles and maintaining his competitive edge.
The following year, 2023, brought a mix of triumph and near misses for Toby Price. At the Dakar Rally, he finished as the runner-up, narrowly missing the top spot by a mere 43 seconds, the smallest margin ever recorded after 14 days of intense racing. This achievement earned him his 6th Trophy at the Dakar. He also secured his 9th Finke Crown, racing with Indigenous Livery, and added a win at the Rallye du Maroc to his impressive list of victories. However, the Baja 1000 presented another challenge, as mechanical failures plagued Team Australia, leading to a 10th place finish in the grueling 1300-mile race.
In 2024, Toby Price's career took new directions and continued successes. At the Dakar Rally, he improved his performance to secure a 5th place finish. He also committed to a full season with Team Australia in Mexico, marking a new chapter in his racing journey. Additionally, he decided to part ways with KTM, signaling a significant shift in his professional path. Despite these changes, his dedication and passion for racing remained unwavering, highlighting his adaptability and relentless pursuit of excellence.
