Aleksandra Totkova’s home city of Plovdiv in Bulgaria is home to the Roman-era Ancient Theatre of Philippopolis, a venue still hosting concerts today. Aleksandra’s own passion for performing in front of packed crowds is clear to see whenever she’s on the climbing wall.
One thing that you can’t find in Plovdiv is an indoor climbing facility. Aleksandra’s father regularly had to drive the four-hour round trip to Sofia for her training sessions while she was still in school. However, Aleksandra still uses some challenging outdoor crags around Plovdiv as part of her training. She insists on mixing it up between rocks and walls throughout the year.
Aleksandra had already been scaling walls for 10 years when she became her country’s first-ever world champion in sport climbing as a 17-year-old. Her gold medal in the Lead discipline was claimed at the Junior and Girls Sport Climbing World Championships in Dallas in 2022. The Bulgarian climber had picked up silver and bronze medals at the same competition when it was held in Italy two years previously.
Aleksandra’s dominance at the youth level continued as she claimed the Women’s U20 Lead title at the Youth European Championships in Troyes, France.
