The 2023 Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series opens in world-class style once again, with a return to the historic city of Boston and its Contemporary Institute of Art on June 3, 2023. The famous steel and glass waterfront venue, which holds international architectural status, will host the cliff diving action once again after featuring as the first stop in 2022 and a mid-season event location between 2011-2013. The US East Coast season-opener marks the return of cliff diving to Boston for the second time for the women and the fifth time for the men.
Location breakdown
The divers will ascend to the museum’s cantilever rooftop, where the men will dive from a 27m-high platform and the women take-off from a 21m platform. From here, and set against the Boston cityscape, the divers will launch stunningly complex dives into the seawater of the Boston Harbour below.
Water temperatures typically reach around the 17-degree C mark in Boston Harbour in June and diving conditions are generally good, but with one caveat: the waterfront location can be affected by onshore winds and the Venturi effect, where the surrounding buildings buffet and channel any wind coming off the Atlantic Ocean. This means that the divers will need to up the ante and prepare for some potentially tricky conditions on the day. Watch this space!
