The best FIFA players in the world have an Icon or two in their team – Ruud Gullit and Patrick Vieira make for a dominant midfield partnership, while many pro players have R9 Ronaldo banging in the goals up front.
More legends of the game were added to FIFA 19 when it was released in September 2018, but which players should be in your FIFA Ultimate Team? Who is the new R9 Ronaldo? We’ve picked out 10 of the best that should guide you to victory in Division Rivals and beyond.
Brazilian legend Rivaldo is a brand-new addition to FIFA’s set of Icons this year. The 46-year-old is best remembered for his prolific five-year spell with Barcelona (scoring 86 goals in 157 games), as well as clinching the World Cup with Brazil in 2002.
Suitably, his best item is packed with fantastic speed and skill in FUT 19, sporting an 87 pace stat and 92 dribbling. Rivaldo’s shooting (91) and passing (88) attributes are also masterful in-game, and even his physical stats clock in at an impressive 78.
2. Fabio Cannavaro (Overall: 92)
After skipping last year's game, Italian defender Fabio Cannavaro returns as an Icon in FUT 19. The current Guangzhou Evergrande manager was named the 2006 FIFA World Player of the Year after captaining Italy to World Cup glory, and enjoyed memorable spells with Parma, Juventus and Real Madrid.
The new and improved Cannavaro boasts a peak overall rating of 92 in FUT 19, with an outstanding 95 defensive stat proving the highlight. Combine that with 85 physical and 80 pace attributes, and even the likes of Ronaldo and Messi are likely to struggle against him.
Both Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard make their Icon debuts in this year’s game. The latter narrowly edges the midfield battle, sporting a peak 91 overall rating compared to Lampard’s 90. Current Rangers manager and Anfield legend, Gerrard amassed a massive 504 Premier League appearances with Liverpool throughout his career.
The best version of Gerrard’s item in FUT 19 is lethal in attacking positions, boasting 90 shooting and 90 passing stats. He’s also sitting around the mid-80s for both his dribbling and physical abilities, while even his lowest attributes are at the 77-rated mark.
Of all the new FUT Icons to feature in FIFA 19, Eusébio is the most prolific in front of goal. The Portuguese legend, who we previously mentioned as one of our most-wanted FIFA 19 Icons, scored an unbelievable 733 goals throughout his professional career.
FUT 19 actually marks the first time the ‘Black Panther’ has ever appeared in the game mode, and EA Sports haven’t skimped on the stats. Expect the peak Eusébio to destroy opposition defences with his lethal 94 pace and shooting attributes, as well as his 93-rated dribbling.
Johan Cruyff is the best new Icon in FUT 19, topping the list with a 94 overall rating. He deserves it, too – the Dutch genius didn't manage to win the World Cup with the brilliant 1974 Netherlands team, but he won three European Cups in a row with Ajax, before moving to Barcelona where he added a La Liga title to his huge list of honours. A three-time Ballon d'Or winner, he even has a skill move named after him.
Cruyff’s best item boasts breathtaking pace (91) and shooting (92) stats, while his passing (91) and dribbling (94) also help elevate his overall rating.
6. Michael Ballack (Overall = 91)
Michael Ballack returned to FIFA Ultimate Team this year for the first time since FIFA 12. Best known for his spells with Bayer Leverkusen, Bayern Munich and Chelsea, Ballack was named German Footballer of the Year on three separate occasions.
The best thing about his peak item in FUT 19 is how well-rounded it is. Ballack’s 90 shooting and 88 passing stats make him a devastating threat in front of goal, but even his worst attribute (defensive) remains at the impressive 80-rated mark.
7. George Best (Overall = 93)
Manchester United legend and ex-Northern Ireland star George Best is one of the most legendary wingers to have ever played the game. Best earned a string of honours throughout his career, and was an inaugural inductee into the English Football Hall of Fame.
The 93-rated version of Best is the top new winger item in FUT 19, sporting outstanding pace (93), dribbling (94) and shooting (91) stats. As if that wasn’t enough, he also boasts excellent passing (84) and physical (71) attributes.
Another Icon who missed out in FIFA 18 was Hristo Stoichkov, previously appearing as a Legend in FIFA 17. The prolific attacker won five La Liga titles with Barcelona in the 1990s, and clinched both the Bulgarian Footballer of the Year and Ballon d’Or awards in 1994.
Stoichkov is equipped with an upgraded peak item in FUT 19, sporting immense goalscoring ability. All of his attack-related attributes are rated 86 or higher, and his 93-rated shooting stats make him one of the top finishers in the game.
England legend Bobby Moore only temporarily went missing from the FIFA series, returning as an Icon in last year’s FIFA 18 World Cup add-on. The commanding defender captained his country to glory in the 1966 World Cup, and remained at West Ham for 18 years.
Moore's high overall rating makes him one of the best centre-backs in the game, boasting a 93-rated defensive stat. His outstanding composure, stamina and reactions are complemented by superb tackling abilities at the back.
10. Roberto Baggio (Overall = 93)
Creative playmaker Baggio debuts as an Icon in FIFA 19. The Italy star enjoyed huge success in the '90s, lifting various titles with Juventus and Milan, as well as helping his country to the 1994 World Cup Final. He won a string of awards along the way, including the 1993 Ballon d’Or and FIFA World Player of the Year.
Baggio’s best Icon in FIFA 19 benefits from outstanding passing and dribbling attributes. In particular, his 96 ball control makes him practically untouchable in front of goal.
How to acquire Icons in FIFA 19
For the most part, getting your hands on an Icon is down to sheer luck. You can improve your chances by opting for packs with the best probabilities, such as Ultimate packs and Rare Players packs, but even then, there's no guarantee you’ll get one.
The other way to acquire these legends is to complete specific Squad Building Challenges that appear at certain times of the year. Some require you to own an Icon already, but if you can find one that doesn’t, it’s worth investing your time and effort into completing it.
