New Zealand's guitar-slinging, soul-pop singer-songwriter Louis Baker is on a roll. He's released four critically acclaimed singles in 2017, from January's Fade to his most recent song Addict, via Rainbow and Gave It All Away. He's also been involved in a series of songwriting sessions at home and abroad, as he gathers together tracks for his debut full-length.
The Red Bull Music Academy alumnus – he attended the 2013 Academy in New York – has, over the past few years, honed a hushed, soulful style of acoustic, melancholy pop that lends itself well to both breaking hearts and huge club-friendly remixes. Check out Fat Freddy's Drop's wonderful rework of Baker's track Gave It All Away as proof.
Baker was recently nominated for New Zealand's top songwriting award, APRA Silver Scrolls, for his track Rainbow, which has now been streamed more than three million times. It means he's on a shortlist alongside Lorde, Aldous Harding and Nadia Reid. Not bad, right? To understand better what Baker's music is all about, watch him perform Fade during a special Red Bull Music session.
