Mexico's Sergio Guzman put in a stunning diving display in Japan to seal a surprise first Red Bull Cliff Diving victory on the cliffs of Sandanbeki. The result paved the way for dominant British diver Gary Hunt to score enough points to secure a record sixth overall title with one round of the competition left to play, while Australia's Rhiannan Iffland won her fourth event of the season to bring her one step closer to the women's title.
Hunt went into the event knowing he had to out-score Michal Navrátil and Jonathan Paredes to win the overall title. He watched from the cliffs as his rivals executed their dives short of vertical to finish the day in sixth and seventh place respectively, before proving his mettle once again and notching up 453.20 points. That tally was enough to earn Hunt third place on the podium, behind Steven LoBue, and yet another Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series title.
"This win just shows all the hard work I've done and now I can have one event with all that pressure taken off my back," said Hunt. "I would have liked to have dived stronger, but there's still Dubai.
There’s no secret to winning for me – just a lot of hard work. To deal with your fears and stay relaxed is what really counts here
But huge props must go to Guzman. The winner on the day cried tears of joy when he realised he'd scored his first Red Bull Cliff Diving victory. "I'm lost for words," said the 25-year-old, who's the youngest competitor in the series. "This is for my family – I love you."
Iffland was also emotional after she topped the podium for the fourth time this year, fending off challenges from Ginger Huber and Lysanne Richard, who finished second and third respectively. "For me this is the big one," said Iffland, who knows she can claim overall victory with another dominant display in Dubai in a few weeks' time. "I came here after an injury, but the dives felt great and I'm so happy.
