You may have already built a great city in Colossal Orders' superb city-building simulation, but now, thanks to the latest Green Cities expansion pack, you can make it environmentally friendly.
Bringing competition to Cities: Skyline for the first time, Red Bull Metropolis is a unique event you won't want to miss.
With 14 new city service buildings, three new district specialisations, four new policies, three new scenarios, three new maps, over 200 new building models and 100 new assets, there's plenty to play with, but how do you build the perfect green city? Here are Colosssal Order's five top tips.
1. Use renewable energy sources
Your city needs electricity to function and if you want to keep your city clean, you should use renewable energy sources like solar power, wind turbines or geothermal energy.
Wind turbines are the most inexpensive form of green energy and they are a good way to start building your city, but be sure to check where the wind is strongest to get most out of the turbines.
Later on you should consider using either Geothermal Power Plants or Solar Updraft Towers unless the map allows you to benefit effectively from flowing water currents with the Hydro Power Plants.
2. Recycle garbage and filter waste
As your city grows, more and more garbage, sewage and pollution starts to accumulate and waste management becomes increasingly important. You can use Recycling Centers to manage garbage and Eco Water Outlets plus Eco Water Treatment Plants to filter sewage before it’s released back to the nearby water sources. Industrial pollution can be controlled by using various Policies, like Filter Industrial Waste.
3. Specialise in green industries
Industry is usually the biggest source of ground pollution in any city – unless you specialise in one of the more eco-friendly forms of industry. Farming and forestry are good options, but so is information technology. By zoning office areas and specialising them into IT Clusters, you can create workplaces and tax income with cutting edge software and technology. And with zero ground pollution produced.
4. Self-sufficient housing and locally produced goods
Energy production and waste both have a big effect on your city’s carbon footprint, but you should not underestimate the impact of your citizens and local businesses. By specialising residential zones into Self-Sufficient Buildings you can reduce the amount of garbage produced and the electricity consumption in your city. The commercial zones, on the other hand, can specialise in Organic and Local Produce, which reduces the truck traffic in the area significantly.
5. Endorse electric cars and biofuel vehicles
Big cities usually have a lot of traffic that generates noise pollution. Electric cars and biofuel vehicles are less noisy and, therefore, also less burdening for the wellbeing of your city, resulting in happier citizens. You can promote the use of electric vehicles with the Electric Cars Policy and you can replace the combustion engine buses with biofuel buses by building a Biofuel Bus Depot instead of the conventional one.
