With the promise of rare loot and weapons, the Leviathan Raid in Destiny 2 is the sure-fire way to raise your Power level quickly and become the envy of your friends. The only problem is that like the Raids from the first game, it’s proving difficult to complete for many.
It’s recommended that you and your pre-formed Fireteam of six are at least at Power level 280 before attempting Leviathan, since it definitely doesn’t hold back on the difficulty front and is packed with hordes of powerful enemies and challenging puzzles.
Communication is vital, too – you need to take the time to talk everything through with your allies, otherwise you stand no chance. Also make sure you have your best weapons and armour equipped; the Rat King sidearm is a fantastic weapon choice, since it grants a damage buff to everyone in your team who also wields it.
If you and your Fireteam are ready to take on the challenge but are in need of some guidance, we’ve provided a step-by-step walkthrough below to make your battle through the Leviathan a little less confusing.
Upon entering the Leviathan, you’ll find yourself in the Castellum – an entrance hall, of sorts. The aim here is to collect three Standard relics and place them into three slots, which will then allow you entry into the Raid. It’s harder than it sounds though and requires you and your Fireteam to band together with an equal balance of offence and defence.
To acquire a relic, you need to defeat a Standard Bearer – a rather chunky-looking Cabal with a bunch of firepower. Upon defeat, he will drop a Standard which you must then take and place into one of the three relic slots. Your Fireteam will need to split into two at this point, with one half placing and defending the relics and the other half seeking out and destroying the other two Standard Bearers.
Placing a Standard takes time so make sure you and your Fireteam are in full defence mode as the Cabal aren’t going to give up without a fight and if they manage to swipe the relics, you’ll be forced to redo the section. Simply rinse and repeat three times until you’ve placed all three relics and the door to the Royal Pools will open.
Once you’ve beaten the Castellum, you’ll find yourself in the Royal Pools and this is where it starts to get more complicated. Teamwork and co-ordination is a must here so make sure that everybody in your Fireteam knows exactly what they’re doing beforehand to avoid costly mistakes.
Once again, split your team up into two parties of three and assign each one a side of the room: either left or right. There are five pressure plates which must be held down by four teammates in order to raise nine lanterns, which must be destroyed to progress. Standing on a plate imbues you with the Psionic Protection buff on a minute timer and all players must have it in effect at all times, otherwise you’ll slowly take damage. Once all five plates have been pressed, the challenge will begin.
The two teammates not standing on the plates must help to protect the top plate holders from a Ceremonial Bather – a particularly strong, difficult-to-kill enemy that must be destroyed quickly. Once it’s dead, players on the plates need to immediately swap around in order to reactivate the buff to avoid taking damage over time. Bathers will then attack the bottom plates and again, they must be killed swiftly.
Once the plates have been held down for long enough, you’ll hear a musical cue which means you’ve successfully raised the lanterns. At this point, everybody needs to rush into the middle of the room and take out the lanterns together, whilst defeating any enemies that rush in to try and stop you. A Psion enemy cloaked in a shield will appear in the middle of the room which must be destroyed quickly with a melee attack, otherwise your entire team will wipe. Once all of the lanterns have been destroyed, the encounter will end and you must backtrack to the Castellum once again.
This encounter is identical to your first visit to the Castellum, except the relic slots have changed location. Again, split into two teams, defeat the three Standard Bearers and protect the Standards whilst placing them into their slots. Once you've done that the door to the next area – the Pleasure Gardens – will open.
Part Three: Pleasure Gardens
Despite the name, this trial isn’t very pleasurable at all. In fact, it's the most challenging section of the entire Raid. To start, you and your Fireteam will need to clear the area of enemies and then, again, split into two groups – of two and four this time. The smaller team needs to pick up the two Prism weapons located underneath the massive gold statue in the area. Upon doing this, a door will open in the floor and the group of four must drop down, leaving the two players with the weapons above ground.
The four players underneath must then pick up the four Royal Spores nearby. This will trigger an encounter with six Royal Beasts that must be defeated to proceed. It’s not as easy as it sounds though as you must avoid their gaze to start with until you receive a damage buff that makes them easy prey. This is where the team of two left up above come in – they need to give you said buff using their Prism weapons.
Communication is key here, as the two players up above need to direct the four Spore holders below to glowing flowers without being spotted by the Royal Beasts. Once a player is encased in light from a flower, one of the Prism holders must shoot it to give the player the Empowering Spores buff. There are several flowers below and you must repeat this step with almost all of them to stack enough of the buff to take out the Beasts. If a Beast catches you (or if you attack it), you all have roughly 30 seconds to rush back to where you first picked up the Spores before it wipes you.
Once all the Beasts are dead, head back to the Castellum for the third time, defeat the Standard Bearers, and collect and place their relics to unlock the door to the Gauntlet.
Upon entering, you’ll notice four platforms in the room and yes, you guessed it, four teammates need to stand on them. Defeat the horde of surrounding enemies and then designate four players to the platforms, two of which have portals underneath which trigger two orbs to appear once the platforms are occupied. The remaining two players need to run and grab one each, which will then teleport them to an obstacle course of sorts – it’s up to the four stood on the platforms to guide them through it.
The obstacle course consists of several walls with nine green circles in. One circle will glow red and two players on the platforms will need to destroy it so the two running the course can progress to the next wall. Again, communication is extremely important here as you’re timed between each one and if you don’t make it through quickly enough, everybody will wipe.
Once you’ve finished, you need to rush to the middle of the room and place your orb into the slot there. You will need to repeat this six times in order to complete this section of the trial. After the six orbs have been placed, everybody needs to return to the centre of the room to grab another orb which transports everyone to a harder version of the course. All teammates need to compete this time, although only three need to finish to pass the trial.
Upon completion, return to and beat the Castellum for the fourth and final time to unlock the door to the final fight.
You’ve almost made it. Only one thing stands in the way of clearing Leviathan and it just so happens to be a monster of a boss – Emperor Calus. When you first enter his throne room, you’ll spot him chilling out on a rather large golden chair. To start the moderately difficult battle, simply shoot the goblet out of his hand to anger him into trying to kill you.
At first, Calus will spawn waves of enemies which should prove easy for your Fireteam to melt through. After a while, he will teleport everybody into a purple dimension to fight a giant version of his head. Three players must grab one of the three orbs dotted around the room here, taking them back to the throne room. The three left behind must relay the symbols which then appears on Calus’ forehead to the players who got teleported out.
Back in the throne room, bigger foes known as Councillors will spawn on top of four plates, each adorning a symbol – take out the enemy with the symbol that ISN’T displayed on Calus’ head back in the other dimension, lowering the shield on his head. He will then begin to fire projectiles, which are easily avoided if you’re careful. After this phase is over, orbs will spawn, allowing the three players to return to the real world.
Once back in the throne room, everybody needs to jump onto a platform and fire at Calus with everything they’ve got. He will attack you but simply jump to the next one along to avoid his fire. After a little while, the platforms will disappear and he will start the whole process again so simply rinse and repeat until you emerge victorious.
