If you’re hoping to succeed in the ultra-competitive world of FIFA Ultimate Team, you’ll need the best players the mode has to offer. Unfortunately, the special variants of these stars can prove particularly rare, and require plenty of effort (and luck) to acquire.
The likes of Player of the Month, Team of the Week and Icon items can prove the difference between success and failure on the pitch, boasting outstanding stats. We've picked out the best methods to obtain them below.
1. Play FUT Champions to get the biggest rewards
There are plenty of generous rewards to be earned in modes such as Division Rivals and Squad Battles in FIFA Ultimate Team. The best earnings, however, can be found in the FUT Champions Weekend League, particularly in the case of highly skilled players.
FUT Champions features special (untradeable) TOTW player picks if you win a certain number of games, as well as coins and packs. If you’re especially good, there’s also the potential of winning TOTW packs that feature a guaranteed set of tradeable Team of the Week players.
2. How to get Rare Player & Ultimate Packs
The most obvious way to obtain FUT 19’s best players is through packs. Unfortunately, nothing is guaranteed, and it‘s possible to blow through a significant set of coins without ever packing the special items on your wishlist.
You can increase your chances by opting for the most lucrative packs on offer. Ultimate, Jumbo Rare Players and Rare Mega packs are the ones to look out for, but they’re also the most expensive, so try earning them through modes like Squad Battles and FUT Champions.
3. Play live SBCs
You’ll find plenty of Squad Building Challenges that can help you acquire special players in FUT 19. Player of the Year and Flashback items are just two types of rewards that can be earned this way, requiring you to trade in specific sets of players in return.
Upgrade SBCs are another set of live events that deserve your attention. With these, you can swap players of a certain quality for something better – silver players for gold replacements, for example. TOTW and Champions League players are occasionally put up for grabs, too.
4. Look out for promotional events
Many of FIFA Ultimate Team’s top players remain in packs and SBCs for a limited time, especially when included as part of promotional events. These events, such as FUTmas and Black Friday, offer heaps of players, packs and additional rewards while they’re live.
As a result, it’s worth stocking up on coins before these promotions begin. EA Sports often run short-time flash events throughout the year, too, and the best way to keep track of these (outside of the game itself) is via the EA Sports FIFA Twitter account.
5. Transfer market investments
If you’ve saved up enough coins since the release of FIFA 19, you'll be able to afford certain special items on the transfer market. There are ways to cut the cost, using buying techniques such as sniping, for example, as well as waiting for their values to drop.
You can also use Team of the Week players to complete special SBCs. These challenges sometimes require TOTW items in exchange for high-value packs and players, so if you spot an obvious bargain, it might be worth investing in them for a later date.
6. How to get Icons from SBCs
Icons are some of the hardest items to acquire in FUT 19 due to their outstanding attributes. These legends of the game can be obtained in packs, but even so, you’ll need some fantastic luck to get your hands on them.
The other method of earning them is via Squad Building Challenges. To date, FUT 19 has required players to own an existing Icon to complete Prime Icon SBCs, requiring a hefty outlay on the market. This won't necessarily be the case going forward, however, so keep your eyes peeled.
7. Weekly objectives
It's also possible to bag a highly rated player via the FUT Objectives screen. Weekly objectives can prove surprisingly generous, offering up rewards such as high-level packs and special players for completing fairly simple tasks.
FUT Objectives refresh both daily and weekly, and task you with competing in various modes such as Division Rivals and Online Single Matches. Be sure to keep a regular eye on them, and you might just acquire something special.
