Madden NFL 17 is nearly upon us, and it's going to bring some big changes. First of all, EA Sports say we'll be given more options when we're attacking and defending, and there are way more features like tackle battles and moves on the cards, too.
But there's something else that EA also need to look at for Madden 17: player stats. Sure, this year's championship and playoffs weren't the best, but they introduced us to some great new characters, and made us look at some older ones in a whole new way. So, how will Madden 17 treat last year's MVPs and standout players?
Here are the players we think will need a serious stat boost for Madden NFL 17.
Antonio Brown is already one of the best rated Wide Receivers in Madden, but after his performance last year, he should get even better stats in Madden 17. Simply put, his performances this year put him in a league of his own, with a total of 1.834 yards altogether.
Although some versions of Brown are rated at 99, we'd probably bump that up to 100. Oh and another thing, EA. Brown has some of the most ridiculous celebrations in the NFL – we'd love you to bring some of those into the game.
Cam Newton
Although Cam Newton couldn't finish the job in the 2015 Super Bowl, you can't deny that he was the best QB in the world last year. Whether it was jumping over players, throwing laser-like passes, or putting his body on the line to ram the ball through defensive lines, Newton was a huge part of the Carolina Panthers' success last year, and his stats really need to show it.
Newton somehow has a measly overall score of 84 in the base set version of his card, and that includes an equally ridiculous 67 for deep ball, and 88 for agility. When you consider just how many ridiculous, deep plays he pulled off last year, and how many runs he made, both of those figures seem criminal.
Von Miller
We've always known Von Miller was good, but his performance at the Super Bowl was literally a game changer. In a defense that was pretty formidable throughout, Miller was able to stand out, and his stats in Madden NFL 17 really need to reflect how hard he is to pay against.
Miller's got a base score of 90 in Madden 16's Ultimate Team, but after the year he's had we really think that should be posted to something just south of 95. After all, he made the game's MVP look positively normal in the most important game of the entire season; the Super Bowl.
When the NFL 2015 season got underway, we all expected Adrian Peterson and Marshawn Lynch to be the most explosive, exciting running backs in the game, but we were in for a surprise. Although it was his first year in the NFL, Gurley was a star player for the St Louis Rams, who scythed his way through defenses with electrifying runs and ridiculous dummies.
Simply put, Todd Gurley Jr dominated his position last year, and he really needs the stats to match. Sure, he might have a few specials cards floating around nowadays, but his base cards of 70 and 77 need a huge upgrade. Something like 90 would be way more fitting for the season he's had.
The Carolina Panthers might have steamrolled their way to 15 wins and one loss last year, but that wasn't all down to their super-slick offense. Sure, Cam Newton and the rest of the O-line played their part, but the team's secondary was also pretty amazing too – and that had a great deal to do with Luke Kuechly.
One of the most influential players in a defensive line that only lost one game, Kuechly was one of the most formidable players in the 2015 season, and his stats ought to show that – his base score is on 89, but he needs to be in the 90s in Madden NFL 17.
Odell Beckham Jr
Every so often in sports, you get a ridiculous combination of showmanship, comedy and a huge dose of talent, and Odell Beckham Jr has spades of all three. In 2014 Beckham Jr probably made one of the greatest catches of all time, and he didn't exactly play bad last year either.
He made 1450 yards in the regular season, but what the figure doesn't show is how well he caught those throws, and how ridiculous his celebration were afterwards. Next time round, we'd like to see a stats bump for Beckham Jr, and it'd be great to pull off some of his amazing celebrations.
Tom Brady might not have made it to the Superbowl this year, but he still reminded us why he's one of the best quarter backs in the world. Dragging a team crippled by multiple injuries, Brady used his experience, strategy and laser-like throwing to take his team to the playoffs.
Brady's stats start at 90 on his most basic card, but we think that should be bumped up considerably. What's more, EA could probably throw some great special abilities in for him, too. For example, when the chips are down and you're close to losing, it'd be fitting to have Brady's stats increase, as he's always able to step up to an occasion in real life.
Carson Palmer
Carson Palmer has been around for a while, but last year he really seemed to ramp up his game. Despite being in his mid-30s, Palmer was up there with the lies of Newton, Brady and Roethlisberger – with some awesome plays and passes to his name. Palmer managed to cover 4,671 yards last year, the most in his entire career, and although he wasn't able to step up when it really counted, he deserves way better stats than the one's he’s currently got. Surely something in the 80s, EA?
Tyrod Taylor
Let's be honest, Tyrod Taylor didn't have the best 2015, but he showed some serious potential and ended the year with the QB job at the Buffalo Bills. When it counted Taylor was able to show good passing skills, but what really makes him special is his ability to scramble out of the pocket when needed. Now his place in the team is assured, Taylor will come out with all guns blazing next year, and really develop the talents he's already threatened to use. Either way, he'll be way better than his current 69 player rating.
