How to fast travel in Red Dead Redemption 2
Follow this guide when you need to get somewhere faster than your horse will take you.
You'll spend a lot of time on your horse in Red Dead Redemption 2. Travelling the sweeping plains of West Elizabeth, the boggy swamps of Lemoyne, the treacherous Grizzly Mountains, and the deep forests can lead to peaceful journeys where you can take in the breathtaking scenery, meet wacky strangers or find an untold amount of secrets hidden off the beaten path.
It certainly pays to ride all over the world of Red Dead 2 on your trusty steed, but sometimes you just want to get across to the other side of the map as quickly as possible. Be it to get to a mission, visit a certain store or you just fancy a change of scenery.

However, unlike Red Dead 2’s predecessor, in which you could just set up a camp and then fast travel to anywhere on the map, things aren’t as simple this time around.
Don’t fear though, because there are ways it can be done. Three to be exact. However, they all cost money and none of them will allow you to travel to wherever you want on the map. Instead, they will let you fast travel to cities, towns and a couple of other key points of interest throughout the world.
There are three main methods of fast travel:
- Camp Fast Travel
- Trains
- Stagecoach

Camp Fast Travel
Buy the upgrade to Arthur's tent to get the map

Once you leave the snowy mountain introduction to the game you’ll quickly set up camp just outside Valentine and you're then free to travel the world as you like. However, to unlock fast travel throughout Chapter 2 you must first advance the story and then purchase camp upgrades.
A key aspect to camp life that’ll be introduced is the donation box and, not too long after, the ledger. As a good camp member, you're expected to donate money or give items to the donation box regularly (or Dutch and Miss Grimshaw will be after you), and the money you help raise can then be used in the ledger to buy upgrades for the camp.
To unlock the ledger you must first start the mission ‘Money Lending and Other Sins’. This mission is unlocked after completing ‘Americans at Rest’, and then by speaking to Leopold Strauss.
Strauss tasks you with reclaiming borrowed money that the camp is owed, and once you reclaim your first debt you’ll be introduced to the Ledger.
There are many upgrades on offer here, from better provisions and ammo, to a chicken coop, but if you want to get fast travel from the comfort and convenience of your camp as soon as possible, then you need to be concentrating on Lodgings.
As the leader of the gang, Dutch gets the first upgrade to his personal tent which will set you back $220. After that you can then purchase an upgrade for Arthur’s tent which comes with a map stuck on the side of his wagon, which can then be used to fast travel to a wide range of locations and landmarks throughout the map, though only to places that you’ve been to before.
This second upgrade will set you back another $325 but there’s an added benefit of your fellow camp mates being inspired to donate more once they see Dutch’s living quarters get an upgrade.
Travel by train
Travel by train to get around quickly

Many people spend time robbing trains, but you can also use them to get around faster. Stations can be found throughout West Elizabeth and Lemoyne, but not in New Austin, and are located in most big towns, plus a couple are in the middle of nowhere. Simply walk into a station, speak to the clerk and purchase a ticket to where you want to go. Prices range from $3-$10 depending on how far you’re traveling.
You can get a train to and from the following locations: Rhodes, Riggs Station, Saint Denis, Annesburg, Wallace Station, Valentine and Emerald Ranch.
Travel by Stagecoach
Stagecoaches can travel to more locations than trains

As with trains, you need to go to a station and buy a ticket, in this case a stagecoach station. Once you've purchased your ride, you’ll be in your location in a quick cutscene's time. However, there are more locations to which you can travel to on stagecoach, and the range of pricing is higher, this time between $2-$20.
As well as the locations the trains can take you to, a stagecoach can quickly get you to Van Horn, as well as Blackwater, Tumble Weed, and MacFarlane’s Ranch in New Austin.
