Watch Camilo Lara and Toy Selectah begin their journey to record an album in 10 different cities.
Mexican musicians Camilo Lara and Toy Selectah have been best friends for a long time now and sometimes best friends come up with the craziest ideas. Lara and Selectah's Compass is one of them. It's an attempt by the founder of revered electronica project Mexican Insitute Of Sound, Camilo Lara, and celebrated architect of Latin, world and hip-hop fusions, Toy Selectah, to make a truly pan-global record.
What started as "a mystical quest to prove that there is only one dancefloor across the globe", says Lara, eventually spawned an epic collaborative project and an acclaimed album. The duo's plan to collaborate with artists around the world via the internet transformed into something much bigger thanks to Red Bull Studios, and the duo were able to work with artists from around the world face-to-face.
The resulting album, Compass, is out Friday, August 26. "It's like our PHD thesis on global music production," says Toy Selectah. And now comes a five-part web series that captures the making of an album that was recorded in cities around the world with artists such as Boy George, Sly And Robbie, Cornelius and many more.
But let's start at the beginning. In episode one, Lara and Selectah kick-off their sonic adventure at home, in Mexico City.
