In a shiny brown leather jacket and horrible dad jeans, David Brent is making his cinema debut in David Brent: Life On The Road.
In the film, released August 19, the odious general manager Ricky Gervais created for The Office 15 years ago has become a travelling salesman, but is still in dogged pursuit of his rock star dream.
The plot follows his self-financed tour with resentful backing band Foregone Conclusion. It sounds like a nightmare, but Brent's ego is gigantic and he really believes he deserves his dream.
With that in mind, what could real-life musicians learn from David Brent? Here are 10 things every rock band should know.
1. HAVE NO INHIBITIONS
In his most notorious moment, Brent looks like a rock god in waiting. Chained to his desk job and surrounded by nonplussed colleagues, he can be constrained no longer and so breaks into a loose-limbed dance routine. When your inner rock star stirs, you must let it out.
2. KEEP DANCING
Once you're renowned for your moves, keep giving the fans what they crave. Life on the road can be gruelling, but Brent dances every night, ignoring the toll on his body for the good of rock 'n' roll.
3. PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE
This is key. If you get a spare five minutes between meetings at work, gather a few of the guys for a sing-song. They'll love it. You get time to run through chords and harmonies, they get an up close and personal experience with a music genius. Invaluable.
4. MAKE EPIC VIDEOS
You might not have Aerosmith's budget, but don't let that stop you. Videos create buzz, buzz creates sales and sales create stardom. Look at the way the shards of sunlight kiss the wisps of dry ice, the heavenly glow around Brent. You can't put a price on artistic direction, so get the best you can.
5. BE MORE THAN A MUSICIAN
The sincerity of Brent's gaze into the camera here is testament to his status as an all-round performer.
6. EMBRACE COSTUME
A simple red bandana around his neck, artfully rolled t-shirt sleeves, velvety britches and black leather boots – a rock 'n' roll staple – illustrate effortless style, even in costume.
7. LIVE ROCK 'N' ROLL
If you're going to stay in a cheap chain hotel, wear a leather jacket with elasticated cuffs and menacingly inspect your room while doing it.
8. BE REAL
Brent's lightweight wheelie suitcase mirrors the words he sings here. Such sincerity is admirable.
9. LOOK LIKE YOU'RE NOT TRYING
This tricky-looking chord progression probably took ages to write and even longer to learn, yet Brent executes it with extreme nonchalance. It doesn't get much cooler than this.
10. NEVER FORGET WHAT YOU ARE
Simple, but crucial.
David Brent: Life On The Road is in cinemas August 19.
