The last time we heard from Thomas Cohen was when he was wielding a mic for London's much-hyped art-punk band S.C.U.M. They were part of a thrilling art-rock scene in the UK capital at the end of the last decade and released their debut album, Again Into Eyes, to plenty of acclaim for its intense, foreboding clatter. Sadly for fans of their tightly trousered and slightly gothic shoegaze sound, their existence was short-lived and, at 21, Cohen put his music-making on the backburner to begin a family.
Now he's back, five years later, performing under his own name and with a more contemplative musical vision. His debut solo album, Bloom Forever, out on May 6 via Stolen Recordings, is influenced by enigmatic singer-songwriters such as Townes Van Zandt, Judee Sill and Perfume Genius, but inspired by things closer to home. Every song on the album was written and recorded between 2012-14 and documents moments in Cohen's life as a young father and husband, including the death of his wife, Peaches Geldof, in 2014.
