More than 400 riders are expected to gather at the top of Slieve Martin, Co Down, on October 8 and 9, where they will tackle existing downhill tracks, multi-terrain sections, moorland and forest in a bid to beat two-time Downhill World Champion, Gee Atherton, to the finish line of Red Bull Foxhunt 2016 in the grounds of Rostrevor’s Kilbroney Park.
With the event selling out in a matter of hours this year, it would appear that Ireland’s mountain biking community are quick to embrace the mass-start event and the inevitable chaos that goes with it as they attempt to beat Gee down the mountain. “I don’t get to race mass-start events usually so Foxhunt is a really different event for me,” explains Gee.
It’s hard to describe just how much fun it is – there are elbows flying and bodies everywhere but everyone takes it in really good spirits. It is total chaos but so awesome.

Ireland is such a great place to have an event like this, all of the riders get so involved in not only the carnage on the way down the mountain but at the party afterwards too.

While Gee’s sister, current Downhill World Champion and World Cup holder, Rachel Atherton, heads up a second, women-only, Foxhunt in Scotland every year, he insists that the women are more than capable of holding their own amongst the men in Rostrevor: “I’m dead impressed with the women who race at my event – I reckon they’ve got the pointiest elbows of everyone. Ireland is such a great place to have an event like this, all of the riders get so involved in not only the carnage on the way down the mountain but at the party afterwards too.”
Gee has been beaten by Colin Ross for the past two years running so we look forward to seeing if he can make it a hat-trick this year, although Gee is pretty determined to put an end to Colin’s winning streak: “Twice running I have been beaten by Colin Ross – he’d better watch out this year, I’m coming for him!” says Gee.
