Cricket
When you play in a team, you pick up a nickname very easily.
Just look at my case, my name is KL Rahul, and I am called Rahul most often. But in the Punjab team they call me KL. It’s not really a nickname because it’s just the initials of my name Kannur Lokesh.
But we have nicknames for quite a few of the players, and none of them poke fun of the players but they are a bit funny.
Here are some of the nicknames of my Punjab teammates.
Ravichandran Ashwin
Ashwin is the captain of our team and has a really simple nickname. We call him Ash, which is just a shoertened version of his name.
Chris Gayle
Chris Gayle is probably the funniest because his nickname so obvious. He is called the Universal Boss in our team, and that’s a self-proclaimed title.
Mayank Agarwal
I’ve known Mayank for a very long time from playing through the domestic circuit for Bangalore. We’ve always called him Monk. I don’t know why that name caught on. I think it just kind of goes with what his name sounds like.
Karun Nair
Karun is another player I’ve known since my early Bangalore days. His nickname is Kulla, which means shorty in Kannada. We gave him this nickname when we started our cricket journey, and it has stuck with him ever since.
Sarfaraz Khan
Sarfaraz has a few nicknames actually. I usually call him Sarfu. But I remember he used to be called Panda when we were playing in the Bangalore team. He used to be a bit chubby then which is why he got the nickname Panda.
Andrew Tye
We call him AJ. His middle name is James so his nickname AJ comes from his given names Andrew James.
Mandeep Singh
Mandeep is one of the new players on our team. He is called Mandy, which is a simple nickname.
There are quite a few new players from the under-19 set-up who we are just getting to know right now. I’m sure we will come up with a few fun nicknames for them soon.
