KL Rahul is one of the biggest emerging talents of Indian cricket.
Since he made his debut for India, his stocks have risen leaps and bounds because of his incredible performances, especially in times when India needed a player with a cool head on his shoulders. His steady knocks in Test cricket and explosive innings in T20Is have proved that he is an all-format player capable to leading his country to glory.
In Test cricket, he averages 35.27 in 34 Tests and has managed five centuries since making his debut for the country a few years ago.
Here we take a look at his five Test hundreds.
110 vs Australia – Sydney in 2015
In the second Test match of his career, Rahul compiled a superb century to announce his arrival on the international stage. Opening alongside Murali Vijay, Rahul stood firm against a potent Australian attack composed of Mitchell Starc, Ryan Harris, Josh Hazlewood, Shane Watson and Nathan Lyon. He fell for 110 after facing 262 balls and hitting 13 fours and a six.
108 vs Sri Lanka – Colombo in 2015
Soon after impressing in Australia on his debut tour, Rahul struck his second hundred at Colombo’s P Sara Oval. It was a composed knock of 108 in the first innings of the second Test of the series. After being dismissed for single-digit scores in the first Test match in Galle, critics suggested Rahul was unable to adapt to the turning Lankan wickets. But he dispelled any doubt with a superb hundred in Colombo. The knock helped India take a decisive lead in the first innings. It also helped to establish him as India’s long-term Test opener.
158 vs West Indies – Kingston in 2016
Rahul put on a splendid display in Kingston to have the West Indies attack at his mercy. Opening the batting, he made a valiant 158 – which was just 41 runs less than Windies’ first innings total. The knock gave India a resounding lead in the match. Rahul also proved he was in it for the long haul as he faced 303 balls and put in seven hours at the wicket. With Rahul’s 158 leading the way, India was able to rack up a total of 500, but the match ended in a drab draw.
199 vs England – Chennai in 2016
India was facing an uphill battle to meet England’s 477 in the first innings in Chepauk Stadium. But Rahul came out with his intentions pretty clear. He thwarted the English attack with outstanding bowlers to score a superb 199. Unfortunately, Rahul lobbed a catch off Adil Rashid to cover point and had to leave the field devastated on missing out on his first double century.
149 vs England – The Oval in 2018
India had already lost the five-match Test series 3-1 with the fifth match to be played at The Oval. There was a point to prove and pride to be fought for, and Rahul led the charge. He scored a scintillating 149 from the top of the order in the final innings while India chased 464 for a win. Rahul entered the field with India at 2/3 and rallied together the middle-order. He found support in Rishabh Pant, and the duo put on 204 for the 5th wicket. They threatened to gun the total down but Rahul unfortunately fell to a peach from Adil Rashid.
