Jordan Díaz's rapid rise to become the third-longest-jumping triple jumper in history began in 2017, when, at just 16 years old, the Cuban-born Spanish resident surprised everyone by winning the triple jump gold medal at the World Under-18 Athletics Championships in Nairobi, Kenya, with a distance of 17.3m.
In 2018, he won gold again, this time at the World Under-20 Athletics Championships in Finland, with a mark of 17.15m, a new championship record. In 2019, he won a silver medal at the Pan American Games in the senior category, with a mark of 17.38m.
In 2021, he established his residence in Spain, first in Zaragoza and later in Guadalajara, joining the group of jumpers trained by Iván Pedroso. He wasted no time in breaking records in his new home, breaking Spain's absolute record four times during 2022, setting it at 17.87m at the Spanish Championships in Málaga, a new PB for Jordan at the time.
Jordan acquired Spanish nationality in 2022, making him eligible to represent Spain in international competitions starting in 2023. In his first competition of the year, he broke his Spanish indoor record with a jump of 17.49m. Days later, he broke his record again during the Spanish Championships, with a best jump of 17.59m.
All of this was just the warm-up to an incredible performance at the 2024 European Athletics Championships in Rome, where he leapt a massive 18.18m – the third-longest jump in triple jump history – in the fifth round of the competition to secure his first gold medal for Spain, smashing the championship record in the process.
At the 2024 Paris Games, Jordan won Spain’s first-ever gold medal in the men’s triple jump competition. He took the lead with 17.86m, just 0.02m ahead of the silver medallist.
