The Red Bull Illume Image Quest competition has become a staple for action sports and adventure photographers from around the world. Created in 2007, Red Bull Illume is held every three years, with the latest edition taking place now in 2021. Winners are chosen from categories such as lifestyle, close-up, energy and new creativity, with mobile-captured photos added in 2016.
Brian Nevins, a professional photographer based on the East Coast of the United States, was a finalist in the very first Red Bull Illume Image Quest. We sat down with him to learn how Image Quest has shaped his professional career in action sports photography. Here's what he had to say.
What is your history in participating in the Red Bull Illume Image Quest competition?

I've submitted to all of them and I was a finalist during the first installment back in 2007. I'm submitting this year, too. Win or lose, it's important because there aren’t many competitions that recognise action sports photography.
What's your photography style and philosophy now?
This is my 20th year shooting, so a lot has changed over the years. I've spent most of my career freelancing in the surf industry, but it's more of a game for younger guys. I'm doing a bit more commercial work these days, but I definitely love to keep my pulse on the action. I've done a bunch of work in snowboarding over the years, as well.
I see my work as a craft. It's like a rollercoaster – sometimes you love it, sometimes you hate it, but you get to enjoy all of the fun stuff in between.

How do you think participating in Red Bull Illume inspires your work?
The caliber of work has raised significantly since I first started competing. It's just awesome to see what everyone is creating each year. For example, when I first entered the competition, we were shooting solely on film. These days, the technical advances are dramatic. It's really inspiring to see what each new generation brings to the table with the available technology.
Why do you think Image Quest is such a big deal in action sports photography?

Going back to the first competition in 2007, it kind of set a precedent that never existed before. It was so inspiring to come together with like-minded photographers from all over the world and connect with people you never would have met. I was with motocross photographers and people who I'd never heard of, and I got to see into their world.
It's a big deal to have the privilege to be inspired by photographers from all over. It fires you up to get out of your bubble and see what everyone else is doing.
Why do you think others should participate?
There are no excuses not to do it. It's totally free and such an authentic experience. It's good to lose, it's good to win. It's a positive experience no matter the outcome. Go head-to-head with others and get inspired by what you see.
The Red Bull Illume competition is currently open for entries. Submissions are due by July 31. Click here to learn more about the 2021 competition.
