Suzuka is a classic venue for any championship and after a very promising test, Ayumu Iwasa went there for the opening round of the Super Formula season with high hopes. Off the pace in Free Practice, the Red Bull Junior fought back and took an aggressive strategy into the race.
“We didn't make our target for the weekend,” explained the 22-year-old Japanese.
“We needed to make a big step forward for Qualifying, we did improve and Q1 was not bad but it was not good enough for Q2.”
“Our system of working needs to improve, both myself and the team. We realised that we needed a big shake-up for race day. We changed not only the car but our whole mindset.”
“And it worked, from the Free Practice this morning everything was a big improvement and we went into the race confident and excited that we could do something. That is why we went for the opposite strategy and ran very long on the first stint.”
“Unfortunately our stop was not great and even though my out tap was good and I did manage to pass one car in the last few laps we didn't get the result we were looking for.”
“It all came from the lack of pace at the start of the weekend. We know we can do it, we will work hard and be well-prepared next time.”
