Marcel Hirscher secured the points he needed in the slalom at Kranjska Gora, Slovenia, on Sunday to claim an incredible eighth overall FIS World Cup title and match Lindsey Vonn's record of 20 titles in total.
Heading into the race, Hirscher had all but won the overall crown with a huge lead over Alexis Pinturault after claiming the slalom and giant slalom crystal globes to take his career tally up to 19 World Cup titles.
The Austrian legend was sixth in the first run on the soft Slovenian snow, with in-form Henrik Kristoffersen holding a big 0.57s lead over Italian Manfred Moelgg. The second run was hard on the late starters as the slippery conditions caused havoc, with Swiss Ramon Zenhäusern the only one to get the better of them.
Hirscher managed to get down for second, but Pinturault couldn't cope with the deepening ruts as the second run progressed and he slipped out of contention. It was left to 2015 winner Kristoffersen to challenge Zenhäusern, however he also lost his advantage to finish second, with Hirscher completing the podium.
Hirscher's third place ensured that he finally added an eighth overall crystal globe to the slalom and giant slalom titles he won earlier in the season. It also meant the 30-year-old star matched the recently retired American Vonn's all-time record of 20 World Cup overall and discipline titles.
His 20 crystal globes are made up of eight overall, six giant slalom and six slalom titles, along with seven gold medals from the World Championships and two from the Games.

Kranjska Gora men's slalom result:

  1. Ramon Zenhäusern (Switzerland) 1m 39.54s
  2. Henrik Kristoffersen (Noway) +1.15s

  4. Manuel Feller (Austria) +1.23s

  7. Alexis Pinturault (France) +1.91s
  8. = Stefano Gross (Italy) +2.02s / Andre Myhrer (Sweden) +2.02s / Clément Noël (France) +2.02s

FIS World Cup men's overall standings:
