Gaming
The PUBG Corporation recently announced that the game that kick-started a whole genre of Battle Royale games is coming to PS4. Up against stiff competition with Call of Duty’s new Blackout mode, and of course, the reigning champion Fortnite: Battle Royale, PUBG still has a unique, almost 'realistic', slow-paced nature to its gameplay which still makes it stand out, and of course, there’s the fact it’s been a long-time coming to PlayStation, that will have some people very excited indeed.
But there’s another reason to get hyped, and the news that came with the PS4 announcement may give you an idea of why. Coming to PS4 on December 7, if you pre-order PUBG, you’ll be able to get a Nathan Drake outfit from Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception and, slightly less excitingly, Ellie’s backpack from The Last of Us. But this got us thinking about the potential to mine PlayStation’s enormous roster for what else might be coming soon.
Aloy, Horizon Zero Dawn
This is a no-brainer. Aloy is one of the most modern characters from Sony’s stable, and also one of the most popular and successful. Horizon Zero Dawn sold gangbusters and a sequel to the game is high on everyone’s wish list, even it’s more likely going to be a PS5 game than a title we see this current generation. Aloy has already appeared in Monster Hunter World, where you could even have your Palico look like a Watcher. While we don’t want to be glowing blue thanks to a furry friend running around next to us giving our position away, we absolutely must get an Aloy custom outfit.
Joel and Ellie, The Last of Us
Given that Ellie’s backpack is coming to the game, it seems peculiar that Joel and Ellie themselves aren’t already announced as custom outfits. However, it’d be a smart marketing move to (at the very least) announce an Ellie outfit for female avatars, perhaps when we get news on The Last of Us: Part II. Getting the release date for that game and also revealing a PUBG outfit would get people rummaging down the back of their sofas to fund running around taking out fools while looking like Ellie.
Lara Croft, Tomb Raider
While these days Square Enix are happy to see Lara’s adventures on PS4, Xbox One, and PC, when she originally 'got famous' the original series was a PlayStation exclusive. All blocky polygons and weird adventures that saw you shooting dinosaurs, a Lara outfit would be a great idea for PUBG, allowing us all to try and get a Chicken Dinner while only using pistols.
Kratos, God of War
Forgive us for this, but we cannot stop thinking about 2018’s God of War. As one of the very best games of the year, and an amazing example of how to reinvigorate a beloved series. And, despite being the biggest game in the world for most of 2017, PUBG Corp’s game finds itself coming to a hugely popular platform later than its competition, and using Kratos as a symbol for regaining what once was would be a nice move, signalling they are ready to dominate. And hey, we can dream that this would go hand-in-hand with an announcement of some God of War DLC, right?
Solid Snake, Metal Gear Solid
As with Lara Croft, Solid Snake’s adventures used to be exclusive to PlayStation. In fact, it’s only really the modern era with Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain (and of course Metal Gear Survive, but let’s not go there) that the series went multi-platform. Snake is perfect for PUBG, though. While you’re spending time crawling on your belly around the maps, hiding in bathtubs and getting that elusive no-kill-dinner, doing so as Snake would be incredible.
Spider-Man
Hear us out, it’s not that Peter Parker would be great for camouflage, or anything, more that we can’t stop playing Marvel’s Spider-Man and, when we’re not playing it, we can’t stop thinking about it. So, with that in mind, maybe a tie-in with the PS4 hit would pave the way for more Marvel cameos in the game. You might not want to play as Spidey, but if having a Spider-Man costume meant that, later, you could play as Captain America in PUBG, well, that’s the right kind of crazy route for PUBG to go down in our opinion. Bring it on.
Cole MacGrath, Infamous
Looking at images of Cole, protagonist of the series that led both Infamous and Infamous 2 and, well, look, the thing is we’ve just realised he basically already looks like the PUBG male avatar, so why not make a big deal of that? Seriously, even down to the dirty t-shirt and messenger bag, the only difference between Cole and the default avatar is that he’s wearing clothes. Weird.
