Red Bull No Paws Down 2017 Osilnica, Slovenia

Longboard 85 kph downhill brakeless

Few racing sports are as raw as downhill longboarding. Charging down a steep asphalt road on a piece of wood (sometimes carbon fibre) and two pairs of small wheels, usually without protective leather clothing, is as hardcore as it gets.
The only way of slowing down and making it through hairpin corners is sliding your board sideways for as long and in as controlled a manner as you can. While the 'standard' procedure is to put one of your hands down for extra stability, there are more and more riders who are ripping through the corners 'stand up', as they call it.
The no-hands-on-the-ground approach is the essence of the Red Bull No Paws Down downhill longboard race, which is held annually during the KnK Longboard Camp in Slovenia. The rules are simple: 64 riders in a 4X elimination race, no 'paws' on the ground allowed.
To get a better picture, take a deep breath and watch the video at the top.
Over the years the 4km-long, 14% steep, 18-hairpin, perfectly paved road in the far south of Slovenia has become notorious and earned itself a suitable nickname: The Bear’s Guts.
Why? Well, the first and most obvious reason is that one needs to have bear-sized guts to bomb it on a longboard. However, the area's known for its large population of brown bears. A fitting name all round, then.
