The path from grime to jazz is not exactly the most well-trodden in music. But perhaps that could change with the success of South London quintet Ruby Rushton, whose latest record was up for Best Jazz Album in Gilles Peterson’s recent Worldwide Awards. Bandleader Ed ‘Tenderlonious’ Cawthorne (after whose grandmother Ruby Rushton are named) spent his teens making beats in the grime and drum'n'bass scenes. But he'd often sample licks from records by the late American jazz legend Yusef Lateef. One day he walked past a shop with a soprano sax in the window and decided it was time to pay it back.
In this exclusive session, you can see Cawthorne switch between the sax, flute and bamboo Bansuri flute, as the band play Tisbury Truckin’ – a track inspired by some formative years in Woking – and Prayer For Yusef, in honour of the late, great multi-instrumentalist who helped Cawthorne find his way into jazz.
The two tracks are taken from the pair of Trudi's Songbook albums Ruby Rushton released last year, capturing their dexterity and flair as they move between restlessness and langour, whip up a wild energy or settle into something more spiritual.
