When a perfect hurricane formed on the charts, Australian surfer and shaper Andrew Mooney jetted across the globe to Canada in search of a mythical perfect pointbreak.

You might be familiar with the name Andrew Mooney. He was a prodigious talent on the Australian Pro Junior Series back in its glory days. He kicked it with the likes of Laurie Towner and Dean Brady, before the global financial crisis hit the surf industry and his peer group were suddenly cut adrift by their sponsors in large numbers.
Mooney took it all in his measured stride however, and simply turned his talents to shaping surfboards and charging the endless selection of seriously heavy waves around his Central Coast home instead.
A half-dozen years after leaving the limelight behind Mooney stormed back into the public's consciousness with an incredible run at 2016's iconic Red Bull Cape Fear contest, held in some of the craziest waves ever surfed. He broke his foot a few days beforehand, and kept his crippling injury to himself in case anyone found out and tried to talk him out of competing, as detailed in Owen Milne's epic Taking Off edit below, released a few short months later.

A few years later, Milne and Mooney are back with another travel classic. On a whim the pair jumped on last minute flights from the east coast of Australia to the east coast of Canada, hopped into a rented motorhome, and set off in pursuit of a perfect, if a little chilly, pointbreak they'd been hearing about for years.
Canada is a long way off surfing's beaten path, but as Mooney says, the formula stays the same no matter where you're headed. "You pick a foreign destination and go search for waves, and enjoy anything else you encounter along the way."
