When Katy Perry first heard Aurora Aksnes' huge 2015 single Runaway she tweeted to the world that she'd finally found music to make her heart flutter. She's not the only one. Aurora's earliest fans were her high-school pals, who, after being dazzled by a school performance, uploaded Aurora's Puppet to a Norwegian streaming site. She's been on the craziest ride ever since.
Now the 19-year-old from Bergen, Norway (who started writing songs influenced by Leonard Cohen and Bob Dylan at the age of nine after finding an electric piano in her parents' attic), is riding high following an acclaimed cover of Oasis' Half The World Away for UK high street chain John Lewis and the impending release of her first album All My Demons Greeting Me As A Friend.
It's a debut of melancholy but ultimately gloom-busting synth-pop coloured by that same sensitive child – "I was strange as a kid, even more than I am now," she said recently – whose early songs were inspired by sad friends and wanting to cheer them up. She also writes, magically, about missing home and pets, and about that famous scene in Titanic when Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet stand victoriously on the ship's prow.
Get an early taster of Aurora's bewitching debut by watching her perform two live tracks exclusively for RedBull.com/Music as part of our See. Hear. Now. series.
