Brothers, best friends, and now world champions, Marc and Álex Márquez are living the dream.
In Valencia this year they became the first brothers in the 66-year history of motorcycle Grand Prix racing to both become world champions, after the younger of the pair Álex sealed the Moto3 crown following a nail-biting race.
Marc had wrapped up a second MotoGP title in Japan a few weeks earlier – his second premier class title and fourth world championship in total after collecting 125cc and Moto2 crowns on his way to the top.
Now Álex appears to be on a similar trajectory after his talent shone through in a gripping season finale.
The pair have grown up together and worked side by side to achieve the incredible. Their bond is strong, so how have they spurred one another on to greatness?
Oh no! This video is currently not available.
Marc and I have been riding together since we were very young, and pretty much every weekend. I spend most of my time with him, and he's my best friend as well as my brother.
– Álex Márquez
Helping one another: Mutual motivation
Marc Márquez: We train together and do almost everything together. I think this is beneficial to both of us. We really help each other all the time.
Álex Márquez: I train with him and every time I ride with him it makes me work harder. It helps you every day, wanting to be better and to win, and for me it helps that he pushes me to the limit in training and I think I also help him too!
For me it's really great that I have a brother who supports me every day, gives me advice so I can improve every day, and more than anything it makes me extremely proud that he is the MotoGP World Champion.
Riding together in the world championship
Marc Márquez: I love that my brother is in the world championship and he is doing a very good job. He works a lot and he deserves all he is getting in Moto3.
Álex Márquez: If one of us has a good race and the other a bad one, the emotions can be quite different of course. It's lucky for me that I race before Marc does and that I've done my race before I watch his! When we get home we try to disconnect completely from racing and try to focus on training, but even at home neither of us wants to lose!
The prospect of riding together in MotoGP one day
To ride with your brother in MotoGP would be amazing.
– Álex Márquez
As a special gift from Honda for clinching them the Moto3 title, the younger Márquez was given the opportunity to ride alongside Marc on one of the MotoGP world champion's 1000cc machines at the Valencia test. It gave a glimpse into the future at the prospect of an all-Márquez factory Honda team.
Marc Márquez: I would love to ride together in MotoGP, but it is a long route there and you need to gain more experience before taking the big step into MotoGP.
Álex Márquez: Of course I have dreams of making it to MotoGP one day alongside my brother, but I'll not let that become an obsession. I'll work hard, continue trying to improve day by day, and focus on my job, and one day perhaps I can fulfil my dream.
