Back in the 80s where skateboards were gaining popularity in Malaysia, most skaters would take it into their own hands to build their own boards. Or if they’re lucky, spend all their lunch money on decks from the one or two skate shops in existence.
Fast forward to today, there are over 20 skate shops operating nationwide and a skate scene that is constantly growing. Skater-owned skate shops are the crux of the community’s existence.
Ricky Goh, the owner of Cool Element Skate Shop first got into skateboarding when his brother came back from a trip to the US. After being on and off on a skateboard, he decided to make a move from Kuching, Sarawak to Kuala Lumpur to start his own skate shop in 2004. We speak to him about how Cool Element was formed.
