Joana Mäder started her career playing traditional volleyball indoors, but moved out on to the sand at the age of 21 when she realised she had the strength and athleticism for the faster and more technically demanding beach version of the game.
Since then she's risen to the top of the sport, earning an impressive fifth place in Rio in 2016 and clinching a silver medal at the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour with her former partner, Nadine Zumkehr, who retired in 2016.
