The colourful dance music institution Studio Barnhus consists of three members – Axel Boman, Pedrodollar and Kornél Kovács. DJ's and music makers themselves, they've been an important key to defining what is sometimes called the "Scandinavian sound". Whatever that sound is, it's probably more a feeling than a genre considering that categorising the Studio Barnhus releases is virtually impossible. And maybe that's what makes their catalogue of music so interesting. Now when the label is entering a new era, launching not only their compilation but also their new audio visual live show, we thought you might need a crash course in the history of Studio Barnhus.
1. Pedrodollar – Ner i Brunnen
The former teenage techno star and original Barnhus member Petter Nordqvist's feature "Ner i Brunnen" on the label's very first EP (released in 2010) marks the tone of what to come from the label in the future – it's fun, warm and a kind of weird.
2. Shakarchi & Stranéus – Mogadishu
Somewhere in Gothenburg, the two friends Faik Shakarchi and Daniel Stranéus made what was about to become somewhat of a classic in the online deep house community. The track from their EP Dödskallar Och Korallrev (2010) is more than just a deep house track though, it's got that sense of playfulness that the scene was craving for.
3. Lukas Nystrand von Unge – En Slags Popmusik
Lukas Nystrand Von Unge is the enigma from the Stockholm suburb Tensta who makes art, music and everything in between. The title of this gentle song translates to "Some Kind of Pop Music" (released in 2013) and is accompanied with artwork made by himself.
4. Axel Boman – Fantastic Piano
Taken from the debut album Family Vacation released in 2013, this track is a perfect example of the moderate elegance that has become the signature of Axel Boman's productions.
5. Baba Stiltz – Golden Eye
Yeah we like quirky vocals and distant organ samples but sometimes a synth arpeggio is all you need. And who does that the best? Baba Stiltz, of course. From his debut album, "Total", released in 2014.
6. Harald Björk – Påskpop
Collector of synthesizers and melodies, Harald is the producer who's career has been lined with everything from atmospheric techno tunes to this mellow track Påskpop, released in 2015 (also later put out as "So Serving" on his own imprint Kranglan Broadcast).
7. MLiR – People
"People" is one of those rare songs that makes you feel 100% good about yourself when listening. MLiR, (which stands for "Modern Life Is Rubbish") boasts some impressive sample work with their EP Spanish Lo-Life, released in 2016. What is also impressing is the amount of footage and time spent by Einar Christoffersson when he composed this trip of a video.
8. Kornél Kovács The Bells
It's time for the last one of the three founding fathers, Kornél Kovács. His debut album "The Bells" shows his versatility as a producer and marked a milestone in his, and Studio Barnhus musical career being the first release awarded with a Swedish Grammy.
9. Art Alfie – Greg's Island
A highly effective mood builder is this stompy ride that Art Alfie takes you on, combined with a video that looks like a psychedelic children's movie that kind of creeps you out. "Greg's Island" was released on the debut album "Reveries Of", in 2017.
10. Bella Boo – Keep Me Warm
Last but not least, Stockholm based Bella Boo's gentle and skilfully composed debut EP "Fire" (2018) tells us that this is not the last we've seen of her...
Studio Barnhus Vol. 1 is releasing August 31st. Tracklist below.
