One of the world’s most popular games, Fortnite, is once again ready to surprise you. Having been known to do crossovers before, with titles such as Avengers and John Wick and sports organization NFL being implemented in the game, Fortnite's constant renewal has changed the landscape for games. This is further emphasized when you consider the virtual concert hosted by EDM DJ Marshmello that was held earlier this year. The games developers, Epic Games, built an online stage with Marshmello as an NPC in the center - doing DJ stuff as a regular concert. The show was only 10-minutes long, but attracted over 10 million players. Perhaps needless to say, the concert was the biggest virtual concert in history.
Now, Fortnite have surprised us all again - with the first buyable brand-exclusive in-game clothing. Nike have a newly released Air Jordan-sneaker, exclusive to Fortnite. You are able to buy skins where the brand-new sneakers are featured, together with a matching cosmetic outfit. The skins are made for both female and male characters in the game, and you can choose from either red and black, white and black, pink and white or yellow and purple. Whatever color you prefer. The buyable bundle, Hang Time, is available in the store for 1,800 V-bucks, which is approximately 18 €. Be fast though, licensed Bundles are usually rotated out pretty fast.
This is the first time in history that a brand of Nike’s caliber releases an exclusive digital garment of any kind in a similar sized game. Considering the massive growth that games, in terms of popularity and as a real-life community, enjoys, this might just be the start of something A LOT bigger. As games are growing into something more than "just" a gaming platform and the communities online are growing to be a force to be reckoned with; more brands will consider marketing their products in games.
