Riot Games know how to take a great gaming idea and make it better. After the initial success of Dota, Riot Games decided to make a game in a similar mold, but make it their own way. Fast forward ten years later, and their spin-off League of Legends is the biggest esports in the world (based on viewership). They know how to make a good game and they know their audience and players. It’s pretty rare that a spin-off becomes even bigger than the original. But Riot Games made it happen. That’s why we believe that Valorant will become something special.
Riot Games are pretty secretive about Valorant so far. But we do know a couple of things. The game is a CS:GO-esque type of FPS, with two teams which consists of five players each, taking turns attacking or defending (bomb defusal is currently the only mode available yet). The game consists of 24 rounds which will go into sudden death if tied. Valorant will be released in the summer. A definite date is yet to be announced however, but a beta is expected to be available later this spring.
Agents
The characters, or agents, in Valorant are an important thing. Much like Overwatch, each character has their unique abilities to unleash on their foes, or friends. However, all characters can use all guns, which are purchased at the beginning of each round. If you are familiar to the FPS-genre, you’ll recognize the set up consisting of SMGs, Shotguns, Snipers, Rifles and Handguns. At this time, we know about 8 of the characters (more will be released). Here's a quick review:
Phoenix – a firestarter who can throw fireballs around corners, make a firewall to obstruct enemies sights and an instant revive.
Sova – the scout who’s all about knowing where your enemies’ at. Can shoot arrows to “mark” your opponents and send out drones to scout positions.
Sage – a support type of character. Sage can stun the opponents, raise a wall and heal friends.
Viper – like the name suggests, Viper is all about poison. She can produce a toxic cloud, shoot acid and throw gas bombs.
Omen – the stealthy, sneaky dude. He can make a “shadow” (copy) of himself, teleport and generate a shadowy sphere around him.
Jet – speed is the thing with this one. Jet can leap high up in the air, dash quickly and throw deadly knives at your enemy.
Cypher – just like Sova, Cypher gathers intelligence what your enemy is up to. With different traps, Cypher can figure out where the opponents been, set up spycams and read the mind of a dead enemy, telling where the rest of the team are.
Brimstone – also somewhat of a support character. Can make teammates fire faster, call in an orbital strike to hurt your opponents with and call in a smokescreen.
