The very name of Rio de Janeiro is the most evocative in the world. Perhaps only Paris can rival Rio as a mental picture painted in the mind's eye. A city for whom the word contrasts might have been invented, Rio is a world city and life is lived with a particular gusto there. The sublime filmer Marcos De Souza was kind enough to take us on his experience of the city and its skate scenes.
A couple of interesting things about skating in Rio: the city is hemmed-in between the mountains and world-famous waterfront, so it really took the rejuvenation of the downtown for global sports events in order to create really good ledge spots relatively recently.
Brazil has an almost hermetically-sealed skate industry, with its own successful footwear and hardware brands, which in turn create a limited, but real, pool of paid sponsorship opportunities. Not every scene can say that in 2019.
This fact helps push the level in Brazil exponentially high, even by Latin American standards, considering what wealth that whole continent have given skate culture down the decades.
Rio is also home to an historic concrete bowl-skating scene, which is by no means common throughout South America. In fact, there are even DIY concrete parks in the favelas overlooking the city.
One of Brazil's most favoured skate sons, Adelmo Jr, was gracious enough to show us around his neck of the woods, while supremely well-regarded local don Nilo Peçanha gave us some historical knowledge to fill in the gaps of Rio's skateboarding roots right up to today.
Rio is about as real as street skating gets. The city's reputation for wildness in all regards is not imagined. See for yourself by hitting play on the video above, where we check out today's skate scene inside the Brazilian metropolis.

Felipe Gustavo

The street skating technician who won Tampa Am as an unknown and a member of Brazil's first-ever national team, Felipe Gustavo is one of the most consistent skaters in the game today.
