A naturally gifted athlete, it’s no surprise that Simon Ehammer chose to pursue a career in the sport of decathlon. Providing the ultimate all-round athletics test, the 10-event contest allows the Swiss to demonstrate his ability across a range of disciplines that require speed, power and no shortage of skill.
Simon enjoyed plenty of success as a junior, including securing gold at the 2019 European Athletics U20 Championships, before stepping up to the elite ranks and setting a new national record.
As well as his success in the decathlon, Simon has proved that he is a world-class long jumper and, in 2022, secured a bronze medal at the World Championships. He’s also triumphed in Diamond League meetings and has a best of 8.45m, achieved in Austria in 2022. No decathlete has ever jumped further and the distance would have been enough to secure a gold medal at the Games in 2008, 2012, 2016 and 2020.
2024 was a big year for Simon. He won the IAAF Indoor Meeting in St Gallen, Switzerland for the long jump. He followed that up with a heptathlon win at Scotland's World Athletics Indoor Championships. He also took third in the long jump at the European Athletics Championships in Rome, Italy, and the Diamond League in Lausanne, Switzerland.
Despite his ability in the long jump, Simon considers himself first and foremost a decathlete and is determined to challenge for major honours while competing in the multi-event contest. Proving that point, he set a new Swiss record at the Götzis 2025 meet with an impressive 8575 points.
