Bike
When you're an athlete pushing the limits of a sport, it's always good to know that you have your head protected. Some athletes like to add a bit of flair to their skid lids and call in the experts to help bring their ideas to life.
AirTrix, a design house and custom paint shop based in Santa Barbara, USA, are one of these experts where Red Bull athletes go to make their helmets unique. Chris Wood, the owner and creative director of the company showed us six of his favourite custom-sprayed bike lids.
1. Curtis Keene
Enduro rider Curtis Keene was raised in Northern California and lives in Southern California. Sauce Designs created the helmet imagery to reflect Keene's roots and the state of California. Once the design was all in place AirTrix were then given the helmet to add the paint.
2. Mike ‘Hucker’ Clark
BMX dirt rider Mike 'Hucker' Clark, got this custom lid sprayed up by AirTrix to use during the recent Summer X Games in Austin, Texas. This is one of the newer custom lids designed by Sauce Designs and was freshly painted just in time for the competition.
3. Jill Kintner
Jill Kintner is a multi-discipline rider and has competed across the field in 4X, BMX and downhill. Not only a talented bike rider, Kintner is also a talented artist and sketched up the designs for her lid. Sauce Designs pulled it all together and AirTrix were on hand to apply the paint.
4. Daniel Sandoval
BMX park rider, Daniel Sandoval, has had two Day of the Dead-themed helmets. This is his newest one, in dedication to his father it features his image on the back of the helmet below the main skull. Sauce Designs worked with Daniel to create this tribute helmet and AirTrix then added the paint.
5. Mariana Pajón
With more than a dozen world-championship titles already to her name, Colombian BMX rider Mariana Pajón makes history with her effortless style on two wheels. Red Bull held a contest asking people to create a design for her helmet. She then selected the winning design and AirTrix got to work making the helmet come to life.
6. Kenneth Tencio
Kenneth is from Costa Rica and wanted a helmet that represented the biodiversity of his country. He provided AirTrix with ideas and specifics and then the owner of AirTrix, Chris Wood, created the design and applied the paint.
