PHILADELPHIA, PA — In Philly, Love Park was always a mecca for skateboarding. However, skateboarding has been outlawed there by city ordinance for more than 15 years. This last weekend, in light of the park’s demolition for its renovation, the mayor lifted the ban and let the skateboarders take over. They swarmed the park in droves, with waves of kids and adults looking for that last piece of the park (Literally, skaters were walking away with pieces of the ledges, tiles, whatever could be picked up as a souvenir).
Old friends got together and met up to wax nostalgic about the park's impact in global skateboard culture. Eventually, the park resembled its '90s self - complete with bonfires, walls and seating set up with garbage cans, and 40oz bottles of booze getting poured over every skateable surface. RIP Love Park.
