It's hard to believe it's been 20 years since the original Sims game debuted. The graphics, design, and gameplay have undoubtedly improved over the years (lots of awesome documentaries about video game development out there), and along with it, the challenges you can do when you're bored with your normal Sim activities.
Since The Sims is an open-ended game, sometimes it's entertaining to do player-invented challenges. There are a million challenges out there to try, but these are some of our personal favorites for The Sims 4:

1. The History Challenge

What it is: In the history challenge, players move their Sims through a series of linear eras. It's a fun challenge for those who like history and want to dress their Sims up in everything from cheetah-print loincloths to 1920s flapper dresses.

How to play:

  • Make two Sims and put them in an empty world.
  • Since these are your prehistoric Sims, they have to live by the rules of prehistoric times. That means hunting for food and living in a tent.
  • Once you complete the goals for the prehistoric era, you can move on!
  • Continue completing the goals for each era until you make it to modern times.

2. 100 Baby Challenge

What it is: The 100 baby challenge is a classic — players have attempted it in most versions of The Sims. Basically, the goal is to have 100 babies in as few generations as possible with no cheats allowed! (But if you do want to know about cheats for Xbox One... we got you.)

How to play:

  • Create a female Sim and have a baby!
  • Find more partners and have more babies. (Remember, only one baby per partner!)
  • You can age the babies up right away.
  • If you don't have any girls, you lose!

3. The Legacy Challenge

What it is: If you're looking for a super classic Sims challenge, then try out the legacy challenge. You start with a single Sim with only a tiny amount of money and see if you can play in the same family for 10 generations.

How to play:

  • Create your Sim and place them on the empty lot with 10,000 simoleons.
  • This Sim must amass a fortune and a family in order to continue into the next generation.
  • Continue gameplay for 10 generations without leaving the original family.

4. The Homeless Challenge

What it is: Try this one out if you're looking for some legit difficult gameplay. In this challenge, your Sim starts out with no money and no home and has to get themselves out of homelessness.

How to play:

  • Create a Sim, move them to an empty lot, and remove all their money.
  • Gather money through actions like collecting things and playing music.
  • Live off the land — no house or job for this Sim!
  • Save $5,000 and build a house to win!

5. Build a City Challenge

What it is: Build a city challenge takes some dedication. The ultimate goal is to reach 50,000 points and control all the households in your world by opening more and more lots and getting more and more Sims.

How to play:

  • Use a randomizer to set your starting Sims.
  • Meet objectives to earn more Sims, money, and other valuable resources.
  • Keep tabs on all your Sims as you grow your empire.
  • Earn 50,000 points to win.

6. 10k Starter Home Challenge

What it is: This is a great challenge for those players who love building their Sim's houses and want a challenge on a budget.

How to play:

  • Create a Sim and move them to an empty lot.
  • Set their money to 10,000 simoleons.
  • Build a house with basic amenities like a sink, toilet, and refrigerator for less than 10,000 simoleons.

7. The Decades Challenge

What it is: Your Sims start in the 1890s and have to abide by the rules of the era, like not using any electricity or indoor plumbing. The rules change for each decade based on the lifestyle of the time.

How to play:

  • Start your Sims in 1890.
  • Reach all the goals for the decade.
  • Advance to the next decade.
  • Make it to modern-day times.

8. Apocalypse Challenge

What it is: Ah, the apocalypse. In this challenge, players create a bunker for their Sim to live in, and if they die of anything other than old age, then you lose. Womp, womp.

How to play:

  • Create your Sim.
  • Place them in a single room with only the most basic necessities.
  • Under no circumstances can your Sim leave the room.
  • If your Sim dies of old age, you win!

9. Asylum Challenge

What it is: This challenge plays with character traits in a way that a lot of the other challenges don't. It's an actual challenge and a great test of how powerful the traits are.

How to play:

  • Create a household with eight Sims, all sharing the same insane trait.
  • Choose one Sim you'll control through the challenge.
  • Get your controlled Sim to meet their aspirations and escape the asylum.
