“It wasn’t the high dive that drew me, " MaCauley explains of her journey into competitive cliff diving. “It was seeing somebody else doing it, then I had to do it as well.” And for the New Jersey cliff divers, even if they aren’t training for the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series, the feeling is mutual. It’s hard to not take the leap yourself after watching your friends experience such exhilaration. And the Garden State has some beautiful choices for getting your cliff diving fix. Canyon Cliff Jump, Mountain Creek Waterpark

This spot is one of the few cliff jumping locations where you won’t need your hiking shoes to get there. Vernon’s Mountain Creek Waterpark is home to a cliff diver’s dream attraction. The Canyon Cliff Jump features two platforms that guests can take the leap from, at heights of 18 and 23 feet. As long as you follow all of the amusement park’s safety precautions, plunging into Mountain Creek’s 16 foot deep pool is an ultimate New Jersey summer experience. And after the rush has subsided, you can cool down with the park’s water slides and wave pools.

Kraft’s Bridge, Hainesport

Located in Hainesport’s Rancocas State Park, this bridge stands 40 feet high, and is a favorite of local thrill seekers. After a short hike, this old railroad bridge provides the perfect overlook of the park. This adrenaline rush is always best experienced with a buddy, especially as a safety precaution, since jumping with a spotter is always preferred. But it’s worth it for the gorgeous views of the park’s lush scenery before you jump into the runoff of the Delaware River below.
03

Terrace Pond, Wawayanda State Park

The cool temperatures of this West Milford jumping spot are tempting to any cliff diver on a sweltering summer day. The hike to get to this secluded spot takes about 30 minutes on the park’s Blue or White Trails. Be mindful of slippery rocks before taking the jump, as well as the snapping turtle that calls Terrace Pond home. Luckily, the water below is known for being crystal clear, so you should be able to spot any obstacles as you take in the stunning Wawayanda State Park views.
04

Splitrock Reservoir, Boonton Township

The Splitrock Reservoir in Farney State Park is abundant with spots to cliff jump from. You’ll need to watch out for slick rocks, but it’s well worth the 40 minute hike to get to this local favorite. The reservoir itself spans three miles, giving you a breathtaking view of the water and its small islands on your dive. As long as you watch your step and be mindful of slippery rocks, this diving spot is a great way to experience this part of Northwest New Jersey.
05

Ringwood State Park

In addition to being home to historic landmark Ringwood Manor, Ringwood State Park also hosts a cliff diving hidden gem. You’ll get to enjoy a healthy dose of nature in the serene forest that you’ll hike through to get there. And once you arrive, the greenery surrounding the cliffs and water offer the perfect escape. Practice correct form and always dive in feet first as you enjoy the sight of the small waterfall just across from the jumping point.

From the platforms of the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series, to the state parks of New Jersey, cliff divers everywhere are taking the leap. No matter which part of the state you reside in, New Jersey is full of high vantage points to savor spectacular views and invigorating adventures.
