Whether you know him from his domination on the skateboard contest circuit, his former MTV reality show “Life of Ryan,” or his charitable work through his organization, the Sheckler Foundation, Ryan is an action sports icon and a household name.
He came of age at a time when the first generation of “skate parents” were actually stoked their kids were into skateboarding and would drive them to skateparks to get better, and to compete in contests on the weekends. The timing was just right for Ryan as he excelled at a young age.
In 2003, at the age of 13, Sheckler became the youngest competitor ever to win X Games gold. He earned repeat X Games gold in skateboard street in 2008 and 2010. A 20-year pro veteran now, he’s won the Action Sport Tour’s championship three times and has won more contests than he can keep track of, from the California Amateur Skateboarding League championship titles he claimed as a kid to the ISF Skateboarding World Championships in 2010.
Avoiding burnout and weathering the pressures of a professional and personal growth spurt under a microscope, Ryan grew into a powerful, respected pro, never skipping a beat. The MTV show came and went, but Ryan stayed the course putting out undeniable video parts and interviews in the magazines. Years later, a more mature Sheckler showed us how he traveled the world in his “Sheckler Sessions” series (2012-2016).
Injuries have been a constant, but with former teammate (Plan B) and mentor Danny Way showing him the mental and physical determination it takes to continue to be a pro skater into your 30s and 40s, Ryan still pushes his skateboarding to its ultimate limits. With a heavy part in “You Good?” in 2019, he returned with his latest part for Red Bull with “LIFER” in 2023.
Ryan’s proven himself to be one of skateboarding’s unbeatable ironmen who can take the hits and keep putting out gnarly parts at an elite professional level. As 2023 finds Ryan to be more grounded than ever, in 2008 he started The Sheckler Foundation with his mother to “Be the Change” in children and injured action sports athletes. He also has his Sandlot Times board company with a 9,000 square foot Sandlot Times skatepark at Woodward, PA.
