I am great because every child in a village somewhere in South Africa knows, and dances like, Limpopo boy.
Limpopo Boy
We had a chat with Red Bull Dance Your Style competitor and sbujwa essentialist Limpopo Boy about his journey. What emerged was a beautiful portrait of a rural up-start who beat the odds to become a leading figure in his field, admired by many across Mzansi, and around the world where we regularly partake in dance showcases and competitions. The answers have been condensed for clarity and readability.
Who is Limpopo Boy, and what is your background with regards to dance?
I am a young man who didn't want my talent to be taken for granted simply because I was born in a place where I couldn't reference my kind of great. I used to play soccer before embracing my talent. Unfortunately, it wasn’t my calling. The response I got from the audience [while dancing] kept me going, and that led to my parents supporting me after I completed my Matric.
What is your definition of greatness, then?
Never could I imagine that there'd be a time when a young man from rural Limpopo would travel the world through dance, and get booked amongst the greats. I'm one of the most watched and followed dancers in the country. I am great because every child in a village somewhere in South Africa knows, and dances like, Limpopo boy.
How has your parent's support impacted your willpower, especially during moments when there isn’t a lot of work coming your way?
It's played a very critical role in my growth. It gets hard on this journey. Every time I wanted to give up, my parents would remind me that some people's destinies are linked to me fulfilling my dream.
Sbujwa, like other dance styles, has a beautiful relationship with fashion. What are some of the clothing items you enjoy rocking?
I don't have a specific label [that I like]. Comfort is key to me. I also help push up-and-coming designers by wearing their clothes when I perform.
What are you packing for Dance Your Style?
I am bringing the sweat and dreams of everyone who loves dance. I am going to awaken the spirit of those who wish to be part of such platforms, but can’t due to their living conditions.
