If you’re an esports star and own a mobile phone this one is for you: The South African qualifiers are taking place at Comic Con from the 14th to the 16th of September. The winner of the local Red Bull M.E.O Qualifier will be flown to Europe to compete against the best in the world.
The game you need to master? Clash Royale.
Clash Royale is a free to play mobile game available on Android and iPhones. Clash Royale is a real time strategy multiplayer that is relatively easy to get in to. Registrations for the Red Bull M.E.O Qualifier happen on Friday the 14th of September at Comic Con and anyone can enter, so you have some time to level up and practice. If you’re new to the game but still want to jam in the arena, here are some tips to get you started:
Clash Royale matches are set in various arenas but the layout is similar. Each player has three towers on their side of the arena. Two of those towers are princess towers with the middle tower being the King Tower. Your job is to knock those towers down, earning crowns. The player with the most crowns at the end of the game wins. However, if you knock the King Tower down, you automatically win the game. Each player competes with a deck of 8 cards. These cards represent troops. In order to play troops you need to ensure you have the right number of elixir. Elixir refills over time and each card requires a different amount of elixir before it can be placed in the battle arena.
Tip number 1: Be sure to shuffle up your deck and ensure you have varied attacking and defending forces on offer. Your fighters range from tanks, long distance weapons, buildings and ground based fighting troops. You can even get spells! You ideally want to have a mixed deck that allows for both aggressive pushes and strong defensive plays while keeping your elixir cost down. The lower the elixir cost to play troops the quicker you can get them in the arena. It is a fine art of juggling to determine what works best but, to start, have a mixed bag of one or two high elixir cost cards with a few lower elixir cost cards to play around these fighters.
Tip number 2: When starting out you’re going to want to toss everything in the arena and hope for the best. However, as you progress you’ll begin to learn that cards work best when played in pairs. For example, a Giant can take a huge amount of damage - so play your giant with a squishy yet deadly troop just behind them for optimal results. You’ll also quickly learn that the towers fight back. The two princess towers shoot arrows while the King’s tower has a canon. However, the canon is only activated when the tower is attacked or one of the princess towers is destroyed.
Tip number 3: Once you’ve got a few battles under your belt and opened a few chests (which reward you with currency, gems and upgrade cards to help solidify your deck) you can start experimenting with decks and which pairings work best for you. You can also start diving in to the strategy of the game which includes bringing elixir costs down, utilising spells and learning how to distract your enemies from towers. Also, start using the arena to your advantage. Building cards dropped in the middle of your field pull enemies off towers. The last 60 seconds of the game offers up double elixir so time big offensive pushes in the last minute for optimal damage.
Tip number 4: Learn from the best. Clash Royale offers you the opportunity to rewatch your games in the app. You’ll find recordings of your past battles in the battle tab. By studying past performances you’ll quickly learn what works and what doesn’t. You’re also able to watch replays of other games in the various arenas via TV Royale, so you can learn from other players and determine strengths and weaknesses of various decks. Keep in mind strategies in various arenas might not necessarily work in others because of the varying levels of the players and cards. There are a host of great streamers who also regularly share tips and tricks which will help you learn to build the best competitive deck, manage your in game currency and ultimately prep you for your Red Bull M.E.O battle.
And now you’re ready to enter the battle arena at Comic Con and compete with the best in South Africa. For more information about rules and how to register head on over here. A trip to Germany and world esports glory awaits. Good luck!
