Cape Town-based Jaydon Lewis has been wowing listeners with his powerful and dynamic productions. Having made a name for himself with remixes of Twenty One Pilots, Chainsmokers and Yeah Yeah Yeah’s, each of which has received millions of streams he was signed to PRMD in 2017. He has since released two singles, “Rise” and “Runaway” and is looking to tour his fresh dance sound. Here he share a bit more of his journey and what he’s been working on at Red Bull Studios Cape Town.
How did you get into production and when did you start?
I was always surrounded by music. I always used to listen to the radio and my dad used to buy CDs, so that was a huge part of my life. When I was 7 I was listening to a Good Hope FM mix and I was wondering how the sounds and music was made. I ended up going on Google and searching up on DAWs and downloaded one. I kept experimenting and I’m 18 now so I’ve been producing for about 10 years. I mainly went on YouTube and checked out tutorials.
Who do you count as influences?
My main idols, while I was growing up, were Michael Jackson and Timbaland. I was always fascinated by how they had an effect on music. Right now it’s the big EDM acts like Afrojack, Martin Garrix, he’s a huge inspiration, David Guetta, Calvin Harris…
How has your sound evolved over the last 10 years?
I started off with EDM. The more big room type of EDM. I then moved to trap. Now I’m trying to craft hip hop/trap. I’m blending in from the old throwback songs in hip hop and modifying it for today’s music. I’m always open to making a lot of genres because then I can blend all the sounds into this new sound that I’m making.
What have you been working on in studio?
It’s been amazing! I’ve been working on a lot of demos. It’s very different to actual music production because I brought in a lot of writers and vocalists just to work on some songs, but it’s a different angle to music. We’ve been writing songs and recording.
How do see the songs being released?
I’m trying to move towards an EP, but right now I just want to focus on one step at a time and get done with singles.
When can people start expecting the releases?
Very soon. I’m heading to ADE for a few meetings so I want to release it after that.
Who have you been working with in studio?
I’ve been working with Paxton, Caleb Williams and I’ve been getting in touch with a lot of vocalists so we’re going to be working online. A singer/songwriter Mason and Dani Bagel.
Besides ADE what else does summer hold for you?
I’m mainly grinding and working on my stuff. I’m having a lot of meetings with my music. I’m meeting up with the Chainsmoker’s manager. It’s exciting.
What do you want people to take from your music?
I really wanna make a new sound so that people can follow and build upon that. I really want to inspire people to create music and try new things. Don’t limit yourself.
