Fka Mash is a DJ/Producer/Electronic Music Artist from Soweto. Started making music at the age of 12 (2006) on a music production software he found by accident on his friend's laptop. He later learned to DJ as a way to get himself out there in 2010. He had his first release under Baainar Records of South Africa in 2011. He then went on to work with Naak Musiq, Samthing Soweto, Tahir Jones and Fortune Shumba on their projects that were released over 2014-2017.
What drew you to DJing? Did anyone in particular inspire you?
I've loved house music from a young age. In fact, I was a collector of some sort from around age 10/11 at the same time I got introduced DJ software by a friend, which was quite a trend amongst the computer nerds the time... at age 12 I started to mess around with music production software. I didn't really take it seriously, but it was so fascinating that I just couldn't help but learn more about what I could do with the software. I loved DJ Fresh as a kid, man (still do). His compilations made everything worthwhile. DJ Monde and Frankie Feliciano's Ricanstruction Series Vol.1 really got me into Deep House.
How would you describe your evolution as a DJ and the sound you push?
I love playing Deep House and mixing it up with a bit of Afro House. That's how I've always played, after following some of my favorite DJs and how they build their sets or how structure their sets depending on the crowd they're playing for and I combine influences from Black Coffee to David August. The only main difference between now and then is that sets include a lot more of my own production.
What kind of journey are you taking us on in with this mix?
Edutainment. Nostalgia. Emotional rollercoaster. From low energy to high energy. I hope you enjoy.
