Gaming
1. You’ve endured one too many arguments about gaming platforms
PC, Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo- we’re all gamers at the end of the day. That doesn’t mean, however, that you won’t come across those trying to push which one makes you the better gamer. From the PC Master Race crowd to the Sony fanboys and the Xbox defenders in between, you’re just never going to get a straight answer on this one- play on whatever you like guys, no one actually cares.
2. You’ve referred to having a birthday as ‘levelling up’ at least once
Or someone has said it to you. Whether you love it or find it cringe, this one is pretty much a staple in the gaming community.
3. Whenever sad gaming moments are mentioned, there’s one distinct example that immediately comes to mind
Video games aren’t all fun and shooting and mayhem. They can be incredibly deep and gripping experiences, and most of us have a moment that definitely made us shed a tear or two. Whether its Aerith from Final Fantasy VII, that scene in The Last of Us, or the intro to *sniff* Ori and the Blind Forest… we’ve all been scarred at some point.
4. You’ll complain about things being expensive but will absolutely justify the cost of a R3000 collector’s edition
Look, it makes sense okay? You get the game, you get this really cool steelbook and an art book, AND you get a statue that is particularly good at gathering dust. Yep, totally worth it.
5. …Speaking of which, you plan out your purchases for big game sales
Steam sales are landmark events which are to be taken very seriously. Those in the know will have their wishlists ready weeks in advance to be prepared. Black Friday is also the best time of the year for gaming deals, and you’ve been scouring the web for bargains on graphics cards and new controllers. Oh, and you’ll tweak your usual spending budget just to make sure you don’t miss out on a good deal. Yeah gamers, I see you.
6. You’ve lied about or cancelled plans to accommodate video games instead
Don’t even try pretending, we have all done it. Plenty of us skipped school to play Black Ops II back in the day, and it was totally worth it. I’m sure you aren’t particularly proud of the time you lied to a significant other about being sick because gaming with your friends was more appealing at the time, but no one’s judging.
7. Your wallpaper on your phone or PC (or both) is video game related
Honestly I’ll take this a step further and rotate them depending on what I’m playing at the moment. God of War just came out? You bet Kratos is on my lock screen. Revisiting The Witcher 3? Time to bring out Toussaint. It’s just the done thing.
8. You’ve had to defend your hobby from numerous people
Gaming has had a negative stigma attached to it for ages now, especially as it rose in popularity. Whether it be parents, your significant other, the media- you’ve probably been told you’re wasting your life or need to grow up at some point. If you’re young and reading this article, you may not have had it quite as bad- but you older folk, I understand what you’ve been through.
9. You have a collection of classic video game lines in your head
I think it’s pretty fair to assume that gamers know what the definition of insanity is, that all your base are belong to us, or what it means to take an arrow to the knee- it’s just common knowledge at this point.
10. Your internet is incredibly important to you
This is not a joking matter. In a time where games are 100GB a pop, updates are rolled out by the minute and games are more often in digital form rather than physical, bad internet is simply NOT. AN. OPTION. Special shoutout to those gamers who house-hunt based on whether the area supports fibre or not- you have your priorities set straight.
11. Games actually taught you some cool things
No seriously. Think about all the historical facts or mythology that you’ve picked up from games you’ve played, the teamwork you’ve had to do in multiplayer (unless you’re a terrible person), and the strategic, quick thinking. There are loads of things to learn from video games in fact, despite what the naysayers may think.
12. You’re secretly hoping for a Half Life 3 announcement
Don’t even try hide it. When each iteration of E3 rolls around, we all have that thought in the back of our minds- one day, guys, one day.
13. You have video game soundtracks saved on Spotify
Some of the best music I have ever heard was made for video games, so I wholeheartedly support this one. Sometimes there really is nothing better than relaxing with the glorious sounds of your favourite game in the background for a dose of much-needed escapism from time to time.
14. You’ll notice game-like scenarios out in the real world
When we do decide to venture out, sometimes we may still be influenced by our long gaming session from the night before. Yes, I do think about how if I was Link, I would definitely need to climb that suspiciously tall tree to find the Korok at the top- stop judging me.
15. You’ve made some great friends online
The beauty of the online gaming space is that there is so much opportunity to meet like-minded people. There’s something special in celebrating victories with a friend, or being there for each other through the losses as well. Even more so when you have a lengthy grind of a game, its great to have a friend by your side- and often times, they can become friends in the real world too.
…and many, many more. The list is endless. There’s a lot of joy to be found in being a gamer, and most of us are very proud to bear that title.
